24 hours in Shek O Village, Hong Kong

Wake up and head to Ming's cafe to get your pick me up. Walk to the beach via the Shek O parking lot and take a moment or two admiring the view from the entrance to the beach. Do a couple of laps on the beach. Enjoy the emptiness and stillness you'll find here as you draw inspiration for the day ahead. Waves, fresh air, dogs, sunshine, sand between our toes and all that goodness.

Once you're done with your walk, take a pick from any of the restaurants available and that are open and get some food into your stomach in preparation for our upcoming hike! Chinese, Western, Thai - pick one.

Go to the toilet. Then head to the bus terminus just up the road from Ming's cafe. Get on a red minibus heading to the city aka Shau Kei Wan. Ask the driver to stop at the entrance to Dragon's Back hiking trail (CNN voted this trail one of the best in the world by the way). Get off at To Tei Wan Tsuen stop (土地灣村). The trailhead is on the left side of the road - You'll see signs right way pointing you in the right direction. Hike the 5.5 mile long Dragon’s Back trail to Big Wave Bay Beach (大浪灣). Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 45 min to complete. Enjoy and take it all in..and take some photos for the memories.

Dragon's Back hiking trail finishes at Big Wave Bay. Oh yes, remember to pack your swim costume and towel, sunscreen, hat, flipflops etc. This is where you can take a nice break and get some vitamin D and SEA. Spend little over an hour here. Soak it all in! Watch the surfers enjoying the waves especially if the swell is good!

Take the red minibus located in Big Wave Bay parking lot either back to Shek O village or to Shau Kei Wan MTR station if heading back to the city. Let's presume you're going back to Shek O village. You should. Nuff said.

Head back to the flat/airbnb and enjoy some downtime while freshening up. Have a shower. Drink a glass or two of water. Get dressed up a little bit. We'll be heading out to Cococabana.

On the beachfront.

Views for days.

Enjoy fresh seafood for dinner while having a glass of your favourite. Excellent craft beer is sold here but to expect to pay on the higher end at this restaurant. You know why. Spend two hours moving slowly through dinner and really feeling the energy that permeates this beautiful village that is Shek O - An oasis, a sanctuary, a living.

Leave your shoes/sandals behind and finish the night with a walk up and down the strip of beach. Walk in the water. Barefoot. Admire the waves and that soothing sound of the waves crashing on the shore. Feel the contraction and relaxation as the waves draw in and then come to meet us. Take a moment or two to be grateful. Look at the moon. Do the same.

Come and visit Shek O Village again sometime!

Maybe next time for a party at Ben's Backbeach bar.

By the way you could head to Ben's Backbeach Bar after you've had some downtime at the flat and before you head out to Cococabana. Little pre-game at Ben's!

Have a gin and tonic or two. Maybe a tequila to get on a little quicker!

Thanks for reading.

Shek O newbie (in love)
